The small isles

The nature around Horsens fjord is unique with its small isles: Alrø, Endelave, Hjarnø og Vorsø.

Alrø can be reached on bike and in car via a dam on the north side of the fjord. The island has been inhibited since the Stone Age, and on the beaches at the eastern shores is it is possible to find tools from the Stone Age. The island has a small church from the 14th century. At the lookout point 'Alrø Poller', it is possible to see seals basking in the sun. The shallow water by the dam attracts a great number of windsurfers and water sport enthusiasts each summer.

Endelave is located just outside Horsens fjord, and a ferry sails from Snaptun to Endelave a couple of times a day. The area Øvre is a large preserved nature area, where you can find several rare and preserved orchid species. Endelave is also known for its large population of wild rabbits, which are impossible to miss when cycling or hiking around the island. The island has high quality bathing water and it invites for playing and splashing. At Endelave, you can get a guided tour of the medical herb garden, and buy products produced by the herbs in the garden. At the island you can also find a museum, a camping ground, an inn and a grocery store, where you can rent bicycles.

Hjarnø is located right across from Snaptun harbour, and it is only a five minute trip with the small ferry. At Hjarnø you will find both nature and culture. The rich flora and wildlife are supplemented with findings of arrowheads from 9500bc and ship sediments from the Viking age. You can also find Denmark’s, presumably, smallest church. Furthermore, the island has a café, a camping ground and a conference centre.

Vorsø is a mecca for flora and wildlife. The island is a nature reservation, which means it is only open for the public a few days a year. As the island's nature develop without human intervention, it has a rich flora and animal life with for instance Denmark’s largest colony of cormorant.
