Shopping - everything is within walking distance

Shopping in Horsens offers both well-known chain stores and personal pearls

By Jeannette Refstrup, journalist

Once you wake up in your hotel room in Horsens, you can look forward to spending the entire day within walking distance. While enjoying your breakfast, you must decide how time is best spend - because there is more than enough to choose from. But can I recommend a tour around the city centre?

Beautiful buildings on the main street
Søndergade is the main street in Horsens – and the widest shopping street in Denmark. Here you find a wide selection of stores and when you look up your eyes meet old, historic, beautiful buildings. Notice Helms pharmacy and Jørgensens Hotel previously Lichtenberg Manor owned by Gehrdt de Lichtenberg (1697 – 1764), who was an estate owner, merchant and manufacturer.

Shopping centre in the city centre
Many cities have their shopping centre located outside the city centre. But that’s not the case in Horsens. Bytorv Horsens has two entrances – one from Søndergade and one from Løvenørnsgade. Split in two floors you find clothes for the entire family as well as many different culinary experiences. If you need to rest your leg, then use the granite benches, which have portraits of some of the largest names who have visited Horsens engraved.

Small shopping streets
Søndergade is, at one end, connected with three smaller shopping streets, which also are worth a visit. Here you will find many exquisite and cosy specialty shops. Take a look inside Jes Pors in Jessensgade, which is an eldorado for hedonists and is run under the motto: “anything in our store is unnecessary, but it makes life a bit more fun”. Or what about letting yourself get tempted by the delicacies in Chokolade-fabrikken (the chocolate factory) right across the street.

In Jessensgade and the adjoining street Hestedamsgade you will find shops where the owners have marked the stores with their personalities – both in terms of decoration as well as the selection of goods. Here is truly an opportunity to experience something different. You should also drop by BeautyInstituttets in Rædersgade and maybe even book a wonderful wellness-treatment. If you are looking for something special for your home, you should not miss Kvist Galleri at Svanes Torv.

Time for a lunch break
When you need a lunch break you will have to face the greatest challenge of the day - because Horsens has a wide and varied selection of cafés and restaurants.

Do you prefer Bedste Køkken at Torvet, where the menu temps with typical Danish dishes like herring, patty shells, omelette and open sandwiches? Or should it rather be Mackies’ delicious American styled food. You find Mackies in the small cosy pedestrian street and the delicious scent of the food is sure to set you on the trail of it. At Mackies you find burgers and pizza American style and tex mex styled nachos.

You could also take a 10 minute walk from the city centre to the industrial museum at Gasvej. The well-known museum has a delicious café called Gaslight. Here you can take a stroll down memory lane in the historically decorated café. And the food – it is of course made by the season’s fresh ingredients and is inspired by the Danish kitchen.
