The Gudenå stream

In Tinnet Krat south of Brædstrup, a small spring tickles from a cliff. This is the start of Denmark’s longest stream – the Gudenå. The most beautiful part of the stream runs through Horsens from south to north. The Gudenå and the area around it invites to fantastic outdoor experiences.

Nothing is as relaxing and adventurous as riding a canoe down the stream. You slowly float with the stream while listening to the nature and getting closer to birds, fish and other animals. Experience the atmosphere and the nature at the Gudenå and its adjoining lakes. You can rent canoes several places along the stream, for instance at Gudenå Camping Brædstrup. Remember to book your canoe in advance – they are popular. The number of canoes on the stream has been restricted in order to protect the nature and its inhabitants. For payment, it is possible to use your own canoe north of Mossø (Moss Lake), but not on the southern part of the stream.

The Gudenå is not only fabulous from the water front. The nature around the stream is special and the history is very interesting. At Mossø, you find Klostermølle (convent mill) where you can observe many different bird species like for instance the kingfisher. At Klostermølle, you can also see a canal, which was dug by monks in the Middle Ages to get water power for their mill. In 1933, Klostermølle was transformed to produce cardboard, and there is access to the old dry barn all year round. Inside the mill, you can find an exciting exhibition about the 14th century, the cardboard factory and the landscape around Klostermølle. For a more extensive look into the nature along the Gudenå, you can find an exhibition at Aqua Silkeborg, which takes you along the stream from Tinnet Krak to Randers Fjord.

Mossø is the largest lake in Jutland and is, according to Danish standards, of an extraordinary dimension. The nature around Mossø is very varied, and the area is characterised by large hills and valleys, which were created during the last glacial period. Once you move around the lake you will go through woods, marsh and heath and you will find many wonderful vantage points. Do yourself a favour, and take a break while enjoying the view of Mossø and the spellbinding area.

Speaking of spellbinding, then the Sukkertoppen (the Sugar loaf) “mountain” must be mentioned. With its 108 meters it rises proudly in the landscape. Several trails will take you to the top, with Klostermølle as one of the starting points. Once at the top, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Gudenå valley and Mossø, which is one of the most beautiful nature sights in Denmark.
